Dental implants represent the most advanced, effective, and long-lasting form of tooth replacement. To be eligible for implants, you need sufficient jaw bone, providing a stable, secure place to anchor the implants. Not everyone has this jaw bone, but thankfully, new bone can be regenerated through a procedure called bone grafting. If you need to replace an upper tooth and lack sufficient bone matter, you may require a bone graft known as the sinus lift.

At Ohio Dental Implants & Oral Surgery, we perform sinus lifts while promoting your safety, comfort, well-being, and ultimate dental restoration.

What is a Sinus Lift?

The sinus lift refers to a specific type of bone graft that we perform for patients who do not have sufficient bone in the upper jaw and are missing one or more upper teeth. With a sinus lift, the surgeon will carefully open a window to your sinuses, where he will then add bone tissue. Over roughly four months, this bone will harden into one place, providing a stable place to anchor upper implants in place.

In a sinus lift, the bone tissue is placed between the sinuses and the jaw. This is a relatively confined space, which means the sinus membrane must be “lifted” to make room. This is where the procedure gets its name.

Why is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

There are many reasons why you might require a sinus lift. The most common reasons include the following:

  • The height of your upper jawbone is too short.
  • Your sinuses are located a little too close to the jaw.
  • You need dental implants and do not have sufficient room for them to be placed.

Often, bone loss results from losing one or more teeth and not having them replaced immediately. Without a tooth root to stimulate the jaw, bone deterioration is inevitable. Sometimes, excess bone is removed during a tooth extraction. And in some cases, the loss of upper jaw bone results from periodontal or bone disease.
